Current Clinical Trials
The Autoimmune Disease Institute is located at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in the heart of the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Our researchers have made great strides in understanding complex human diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), Sjögren’s syndrome, and sarcoidosis and have identified potential new areas for targeted disease treatment. However, more research is needed to more fully understand the complexities of these diseases and is on-going.
Currently, there are clinical trials for SLE and RA that are actively enrolling subjects in order to help understand how these diseases develop and can be prevented. The unique individual contributions of enrolled subjects are crucial to the success of these studies.
Specific information about each of the studies can be found below:
SMILE (Study of anti-Malarials in Incomplete Lupus Erythematosus; ClinicalTrials.gov ID #NCT03030118)
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a disease in which the immune system abnormally attacks different organ systems and causes major organ damage and shortens lifespan in relatively young persons. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to improving outcomes for SLE patients, however preventing the disease in subjects exhibiting some of the features of SLE, classified as incomplete lupus erthyematosus (ILE), is not yet possible.
This study aims to explore the effectiveness of Hydroxychloroquine in slowing or halting the progression of the clinical and immunologic features that define SLE in subjects identified as having ILE. If you have been diagnosed with ILE, you could be a participant in this study.

StopRA (Strategy to Prevent the Onset of Clinically-Apparent Rheumatoid Arthritis; ClinicalTrials.gov ID #NCT02603146)
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the joints of the body, leading them to become inflamed and feel stiff, swollen, and painful. Stop RA is the first prevention research study for RA conducted in the United States and is in the process of recruiting subjects into the trial. If you have not been diagnosed with RA, but have a family member that has, you could be a participant in this study. Healthy Volunteers
Some studies require specimens from healthy volunteers in order to provide a comparison to the subjects that have the disease or condition. Healthy volunteers are recruited to serve as matched controls for patient groups and are vital for providing a baseline for comparison in research studies. If you are healthy and have no known significant health problems, you could be a healthy control in a study.
